Minoxidil

Dutasteride
Blocks both forms of 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, the hormone that shrinks follicles in pattern hair loss. Tretinoin
A retinoid. It increases how much minoxidil passes into the scalp, and in a small trial once-daily minoxidil with tretinoin performed similarly to twice-daily minoxidil alone.

Cetirizine
An antihistamine studied as a topical for pattern hair loss, where it may help calm scalp inflammation. Early trials are small, and results so far suggest it may help as an addition rather than on its own.
Each active ingredient is used in FDA-approved medicines. This combination is compounded by a licensed U.S. pharmacy and is not itself FDA-approved. Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved for hair loss; using dutasteride, tretinoin and cetirizine on the scalp for hair loss is off-label.

Medical questionnaire

Physician review and prescription
Each completed questionnaire is reviewed by a licensed physician practicing in the United States. The physician on the Curekey care team evaluates the medical history, hair loss pattern, and any contraindications, and determines whether prescription treatment is medically appropriate. If treatment is approved, a prescription is issued. If it is not appropriate, the patient is informed and not charged.

Physician-recommended treatment
A licensed U.S. physician reviews your case and decides whether prescription treatment is right for you. Options include topical solutions, oral medications, or combination therapy used for androgenetic alopecia.

Side effects to know about
Most people tolerate topical treatment well, and side effects are usually mild. These are the ones worth knowing before you start.
- Scalp dryness, redness, itching or flaking, most often in the first few weeks. Tretinoin and minoxidil can both contribute.
- Temporary shedding in the first 2 to 8 weeks as follicles reset their growth cycle. It usually settles on its own; see minoxidil shedding.
- Unwanted hair on the forehead or temples if the solution runs off the scalp. Applying the measured 1 ml and letting it dry before lying down helps; see minoxidil and facial hair.
- A small amount of dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin, so the sexual side effects reported with oral DHT blockers (lower libido, erection or ejaculation changes) are possible, though less expected with scalp application.
- Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle the solution, because dutasteride and tretinoin can harm a developing baby.
Tell the physician in your assessment about any medications you take, any skin conditions, and any reaction you have had to minoxidil before. If side effects bother you after starting, message your care team.
